CONCORD ANNOUNCES 12-COUNTY SCIENCE BOWL RESULTS

ATHENS, WV – On Saturday, November 4^th, Concord University hosted the first in-person West Virginia Science Bowl preliminary high school competition since 2019. The 2020-2022 competitions were all held virtually.

The November 4^th event determined which high school teams from the 12-county Regional Education Services Agencies (RESA) 1 and 4 regions would be eligible to go on to the state competition scheduled for February 3, 2024. The RESA 1 counties include Raleigh, Summers, Monroe, Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming. The RESA 4 counties are Braxton, Webster, Pocahontas, Greenbrier, Fayette, and Nicholas. Seven teams from five regional high schools attended along with Concord volunteers, teachers/coaches, and family members. High schools with competing teams included Bluefield, Oak Hill, PikeView, Princeton, and Woodrow Wilson.

Normally, the top three teams from each RESA area qualify to go to state with one additional team designated as an alternate. Because RESA 4 only had two competing teams, the third spot going to state is filled by a RESA 1 team instead.

The top four winning teams in the competition overall are:

• 1^st place – Oak Hill team 1
• 2^nd place – Bluefield
• 3^rd place – PikeView team 1
• 4^th place – PikeView team 2

Teams qualifying for the state competition for RESA 1 are:

• 1^st place – Bluefield
• 2^nd place – PikeView team 1
• 3^rd place – PikeView team 2
• 5^th place (alternate) – Princeton

Teams qualifying for the state competition for RESA 4 are:

• 1^st place – Oak Hill team 1
• 2^nd place – Oak Hill team 2
• 4^th place – Woodrow (RESA 1)

The West Virginia Regional Science Bowl is affiliated with the National Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Science Bowl is a tournament-style academic competition which tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics.
