CONCORD UNIVERSITY TO HOST BEVERLY SHARP, DIRECTOR OF WV REENTRY COUNCILS FOR SIMULATION EVENT
ATHENS, WV – The Department of Social Work and Sociology is pleased to invite students, faculty, and professionals from the community to attend the Overcoming Barriers to Reentry Simulation event on Wednesday, April 17 from 10 AM to 12 PM. The event will be held in the Jean & Jerry L. Beasley Student Center and is facilitated by Beverly Sharp, Director of WV Reentry Councils. There is no cost to attend, but you must register by emailing lpace@concord.edu.
The simulation will provide a sense of what it’s like to be released from the correctional system and the barriers formerly incarcerated people face with everything from jobs, family, housing, and supervision restrictions. Participants will be given bios and tasks to complete in this interactive experience to increase awareness and understand the barriers to reentry experienced by those previously incarcerated.
Beverly Sharp earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections from Marshall University. Most of her professional career was spent with the United States Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons, where she retired after 30 years of service. Currently her goals are developing programs, initiatives, and training to improve the opportunities for former offenders to successfully return to the community as productive citizens, as well as to educate communities on the barriers faced by former offenders, in order to reduce recidivism and to build bridges to a better community.
