CONCORD UNIVERSITY UPWARD BOUND STUDENTS VISIT VIRGINIA-MARYLAND COLLEGE OF VET MEDICINE

ATHENS, WV – Forty students from the Concord University Upward Bound program traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia, for a community event that was put on by current veterinary students at the Virginia-Maryland College of Vet Medicine located at the Virginia Tech location on Saturday, April 20. The event held all-day activities, lectures, demonstrations, and club booths for all ages all throughout the day. The Dean of the College spoke directly with the Upward Bound students encouraging veterinarian studies. Students would complete undergraduate program at Concord and continue to Virginia-Maryland College of Vet Medicine at Virginia Tech. The Upward Bound students had the chance to meet the vet med faculty, tour the college, learn about their programs, and enjoy an abundance of activities. Virginia Tech emphasized that the event was the perfect chance to encourage exploration to students on how to protect and improve animal, human, and environmental health.

The Upward Bound program serves students in Greenbrier, Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, and Summers counties. All services provided by the Upward Bound program are free. There are three components of the Upward Bound program: the academic year program, a summer residential component, and a residential bridge component. The academic year and non-bridge summer session will provide instruction in composition, foreign languages, literature, mathematics, and laboratory science. Additional activities may include computer science, study skills, career exploration, multi-cultural awareness, and college cross disciplinary activities that provide opportunities to help the students achieve a successful college entry. Classes in life skills, tutoring, and individual and group advising are also provided.
